Rohr Set To Drag NFF Before FIFA As Onigbinde, Adepoju Fault NFF On Timing

LAGOS DECEMBER 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may be dragged before the world soccer ruling body, FIFA, following the unceremonious dismissal of Coach Gernot Rohr as the Super Eagles manager, so said one of the German’s confidants.

The NFF in a statement released late on Sunday, announced that it had severed relationship with the former Bayern Munich defender but remained silent on its contractual agreement with the German.

Incidentally, Rohr’s dismissal came barely 20 months after he was handed a two-year contract extension in May 2020 following the completion of an initial four-year term dating back to 2016.

NFF reportedly owed the German five-month outstanding salary with almost a year’s wage due by the end of his valid contract in December 2022.

NationSport learnt that the NFF was being tactical as regards the payment of outstanding wages even in its official communication to Rohr over his disengagement.

“The truth is that coach Gernot Rohr had not been paid all the money he is being owed,” a usually reliable source close to the German told NationSport yesterday.

“But the coach is least worried because his team of lawyers will address the issues in the due course and you can’t be so sure if this matter would not be taken to FIFA,” the source warned.

Yet in a terse reaction to his purported dismissal, the former Bordeaux manager told NationSport that he was not surprised about the turn of events, even as he tipped the Super Eagles to excel at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Cameroon.

“Austin (Eguavoen) and Paul (Aigbogun) will have a good squad which should win the AFCON,” a reluctant Rohr volunteered. “For me, it is (new coaching appointments by NFF) not a surprise; they (Austin and Paul) have been with the team for the past one year.”

Reacting to the termination of Rohr appointment, Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and two-time head coach of the Super Eagles, Adegboye Onigbinde, has faulted the decision of NFF to sack Gernot Rohr, adding that the German tactician should have been relieved of his job five years ago.

“We have some people directly in charge and they must have their reason for not just taking this decision but for delaying such a decision for five years,” Onigbinde told Naija Info FM Abuja.

“At any rate the decision has been made and one hopes the new technical people will face their jobs squarely.

“But one thing Nigerians usually forget or want to ignore is that coaches handling a team cannot achieve success alone without the administrative support and that is one thing I have suffered in the handling of the national team in the two occasions I was there.

“ I hope the administrators this time around will provide adequate support to the technical crew.” he added.

Meanwhile, ex-international Mutiu Adepoju has expressed doubt over the timing of Rohr’s sack as the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) begins in a few weeks, adding that the sack had been expected long before now.

“This decision is something that has been expected. Fans are not satisfied with the results of the team despite the fact that we have good and young players.

“ I am also not sure if the timing is good, but we will see with the result of the AFCON,’’ he said.
