Shehu Sanni Hails Shoprite’s Planned Exit As Good Omen For Local Supermarkets

LAGOS AUGUST 3RD (NEWSRANGERS)-Senator Shehu Sani says the planned exit of South African grocery retailer Shoprite from Nigeria will benefit local supermarkets.

The former Kaduna South lawmaker stated this on Monday following announcement by the company that it is discontinuing operation in Nigeria after 15 years.

“If Shoprite wants to stay, they can stay; if they want to go, they can go; it will help local supermarkets to grow,” Sani wrote on Twitter.

Many Nigerians have long played up the idea of the company leaving Nigeria for the benefit of local competitors like Ebeano Supermarket.

Last year, Shoprite and several other businesses in Nigeria of South African origin were attacked and looted following xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
