LAGOS MAY 11TH (NEWSRANGERS) Parents, relatives and sympathisers gathered in a community in Bassa Local Government Area on Sunday following a deadly attack that claimed several lives during a night invasion by unidentified assailants.
According to a report aired by Trust TV on May 10, 2026, the attack occurred on Friday night when armed attackers reportedly stormed the community, causing panic among residents. The report stated that many residents fled their homes after the attackers allegedly began shooting sporadically across the area.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants moved from one house to another during the invasion, attacking residents and leaving multiple casualties behind. The latest incident has reportedly thrown the community into mourning once again as insecurity continues to affect parts of Bassa Local Government Area in Plateau State.
Speaking during the mass burial, Secretary-General of the Irigwe Development Association, Andrew Auta, described the attack as tragic and condemned the recurring violence in the area.
According to Auta, the attackers used machetes during the assault and targeted residents inside their homes. “They entered into the communities with machete, going from one room to the other, picking children, adults, women, macheting them to death. And that is why we are gathered here. We are here to bury them, to give them mass burial,” he said.
Auta questioned how long residents would continue to experience repeated attacks and killings in the area. “For how long shall we continue to endure this?” he asked.
He also appealed directly to the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen security operations in Plateau State. “So I want to call on the government, particularly His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has promised that something would be done concerning the security of Plateau State,” Auta stated.
He further referenced earlier assurances regarding the deployment of security technologies and measures aimed at tracking perpetrators of violent attacks in the state. “In fact, by even sending things that will track these perpetrators. So I don’t know why this thing is happening this way,” he added.
