LAGOS MAY 11TH (NEWSRANGERS)*A final year student of the University of Benin has been shot dead. The victim was shot in front of the main gate of UNIBEN Ugbowo campus.
Witnesses said the victim was driving a GLK Mercedes-Benz when he was attacked. Two other passengers in the vehicle who survived the attack were rushed to the University of Benin Health Care Centre. It was gathered that the masked gunmen shot the victims at close range.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday under circumstances that remain unclear, throwing the university community into panic and raising fresh concerns over insecurity around the campus environment.
SaharaReporters gathered that the deceased student had just concluded his semester examinations before he was attacked.
A disturbing video obtained by SaharaReporters showed the victim slumped inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound on his forehead, while bullets were seen piercing through the windscreen.
Residents and bystanders gathered around the scene as the lifeless body remained inside the car.
Reacting to the development, the management of the University of Benin distanced members of the institution from the killing, suggesting that the incident might be linked to suspected cult-related violence outside the university environment.
In a statement, the university expressed sadness over the tragic incident and urged students and staff members to remain calm, vigilant and security conscious while continuing their academic activities peacefully.
The institution also assured members of the university community of its commitment to ensuring safety within the campus environment.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, on her mobile phone were unsuccessful.
