EFCC Boss Discloses Why Corruption Will Continue To Strive In Nigeria

EFCC-BAWA

LAGOS DECEMBER 15TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that corruption continues to fight back in the country despite measures deployed by various government agencies to arrest the iniquity.

It, however, said the ugly trend of corruption and its attendance consequences might strive as long as Nigerians continue to celebrate corrupt leaders.

Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, gave the revelation, yesterday, in Kano during an integrity award presentation organised by Centre for Awareness on Justice and Accountability (CAJA), in collaboration with The Penlight Centre.

Bawa, who was represented by Deputy Director, EFCC Kano Zonal Office, Sunday Ofanmon, said that the Commission could only fight corruption based on intelligent information but lamented dearth of credible information from the public.

The anti-graft commission boss cautioned Nigerians not to mortgage their conscience to selfish politicians, who are ready to use proceeds of corruption to buy their votes during elections, adding that falling prey to those selfish individuals will deprive them of better basic amenities in future.

However, Director, Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Research and Training, Mumbayya House, Bayero University, Prof. Abu Fagge, has challenged the EFCC to account for the proceeds of forfeited property recovered from corruption-related cases.

In his paper on corruption and integrity in Nigeria, the don lamented that despite abundant natural and human resources, Nigeria could not develop because of lack of integrity of its political leaders who are also guilty of corruption.

He wondered how corruption would be fought in a country where corrupt leaders sentenced to serve the consequences of their action are thereafter granted presidential pardon.

Fagge, therefore, urged Nigerians not to vote corrupt leaders.
Also, Head of Transparency International, Nigeria, Auwalu Musa Rafsanjani, urged Nigerians to use next year’s elections to reject politicians who used public funds to unleash poverty and compromise election. He faulted the governors on diversion of security votes for personal interest.

Rafsanjani urged the security agencies to embrace integrity in their service delivery with a pledge of allegiance to Nigerians and not the politicians.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Kano State Command, DCP Abubakar Subairu, who represented the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, applauded the CAJA for using the occasion to celebrate Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Daniel Amah for his integrity.

Convener of the event, and Executive Director of CAJA, Kabiru Dakata, said the occasion was aimed at identifying and honouring Amah who showed exemplary integrity and leadership in fighting corruption in Nigeria.

Daka noted that for 2022 award, the management of CAJA, after thorough scrutiny and assessment, approved Amah, having demonstrated a high level of integrity by rejecting a $200,000 bribe in a case of alleged armed robbery in April 2022.
