Chairman Of Electoral Institute Hails EVMAT Role In Conduct Of Peaceful Election In Nigeria

LAGOS MARCH 2ND (NEWSRANGERS)-Chairman Board of the Electoral Institute Prof Abdullahi Abdu Zuru has commended the important role Election Violence Mitigation and Advocacy Tool (EVMAT) played finding  ways to mitigate, and possibly eradicate the incidences of violence in the Nigerian electoral process.

Making the commendation in an opening address he delivered at the workshop on Review and Standardisation of EVMMAT Instrument ahead of Osun, Ekiti Governorship and 2023 General Elections,  Prof Abdullahi Abdu Zuru observed that the instrument’s predictive capacity to identify possible violence flash points has been very helpful to the Commission since its development in 2015.

“In particular, the INEC Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) is continuously using the EVMAT report and policy recommendations in strategising its whole gamut of election security architecture which is an indication of the zero tolerance INEC has for incidences of violence in our elections,” he stated.

Zuru recalled that   the deployment and testing of this tool began with its testing during the General Election in 2015, adding that  since then, it has become a tradition of the Commission to deploy it in all the major elections.

“For example, it has been deployed in Kogi, Bayelsa, Ondo, Edo, Anambra, and just concluded FCT Council Elections. The tool will also be deployed in Ekiti, and Osun States Governorship and 2023 General Elections.

“In view of its significance to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive, and most importantly, peaceful elections, re-appraising its operationalisation,  in terms of predictability and reliability of the data being generated from its deployment, is not only necessary but very timely as we prepare for yet another electoral cycle, beginning with Ekiti, Osun and ultimately the 2023 General Elections. This is the reason why we are all gathered here today.

He commend their development partner, IFES   for standing by the Commission always, stressing that their contributions to INEC programmes, processes and procedures are indeed, unrivalled. He said that  facilitation of this workshop is specifically and specially recognised and appreciated

“We also cherish and value all our CSOs and resource persons from the academia for always being there for us through providing the analytical insights needed to draw valuable policy recommendations from the surveys using the EVMAT. I believe that your presence here today will add a lot of value to this workshop.,” he stated.
