Bank Drags Hacker To Court For Stealing $64,822.97

LAGOS DECEMBER 26TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The management of Unity Bank Plc, Lagos has dragged their customer, Adeagbo Bayonle, 37, before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly conniving with one Dayo Ogunseyitan now at large to hack into the account of the bank and used ATM card to steal the sum of $64,822.97 from various account of the bank.
A Police source said that following the theft, the management of Unity Bank reported the matter through a petition to the Commissioner of Police, CP in charge of the Police Special Fraud Unit, PSFU, Ikoyi, Lagos, Ibrahim Lamorde who directed a team led by ASP Lazarus Nurus to fish out the suspects.
The Police team, according to the source tracked and arrested the accused at a hide out following a tip off while his accomplice managed to escaped.
The source said that the Police had launched a manhunt for the arrest of the fleeing Ogunseyitan.
Bayonle was charged before an Igbosere Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of felony to wit, stealing.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Wewe Adegbayi informed the Court in charge No V/73/2017 that the accused and Dayo Ogunseyitan now at large committed the offense on 6 November, 2017 in Lagos, Ibadan and other various places in Nigeria.
Adegbayi told the Court that the accused and his accomplice connived to hack into the account of the bank and modified his ATM card to dollars denominations and used the ATM card to withdrew the sum of $64,822.97 from the Bank accounts in Lagos, Ibadan and other various places and escaped before the accused was eventually arrested.
He said that the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 323(2) and 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime and his counsel, Olusegun Adaranijo prayed the Court to admit the defendant to bail in the most liberal terms, adding that he would jump bail if granted.
Magistrate B.I Bakare granted him bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a landed property owner in Lagos.
Bakare also directed that the two surties must deposit the sum of N50,000 each into the Court’s Chief Registrars account and adjourned the case till 12 January, 2017 for mention.
Bakare ordered that the defendant be kept at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till he fulfill the bail conditions.
