Abuja Barber Drags Police To Court, Demands  ₦1bn Over Loss Of Eye

LAGOS MAY 27TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-According to a report by Sahara Reporters on Tuesday, 26 May, 2026, in a case that has ignited widespread outrage across Nigeria, a hardworking 26-year-old barber from Bwari in Abuja has taken the bold step of suing the Nigeria Police Force and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bwari for a staggering ₦1 billion in damages.

Abraham Emmanuel’s world was forever altered in the early hours of the New Year when, according to multiple eyewitness accounts, a tear gas canister fired at close range by the DPO tore into his left eye, leaving him permanently blinded in one eye.

What should have been a night of joyful celebration turned into a nightmare of unimaginable pain and loss.

On December 31, 2025, as residents of Bwari marked the crossover into 2026, police operatives under CSP Babayola Musa reportedly launched a heavy handed night raid.

Eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos: armoured vehicles rolling through peaceful streets, gunfire cracking in the air, and tear gas canisters unleashed indiscriminately.

Abraham was simply sitting in front of his home with friends when the horror unfolded.

“He came down from the armoured vehicle, knelt, aimed directly at us,” one eyewitness recounted.

The canister struck Abraham with devastating force. Blood poured from his face as he collapsed.

Rushed first to a local hospital and then to Asokoro General Hospital for emergency surgery, doctors confirmed the irreversible damage: he has lost vision in his left eye.

Videos circulating online show the young man in agony, his face bandaged, clutching the very canister that robbed him of his sight.

Abraham Emmanuel is no troublemaker. He is a determined young entrepreneur, a barber hustling daily to build a better life in one of Abuja’s bustling suburbs.

His livelihood depends on his eyes his precision with clippers and scissors now hangs in the balance.

Friends and community members describe him as a peaceful, hardworking soul whose only “crime” that night was being in the wrong place at the wrong time during a police operation.

The lawsuit accuses the police and the DPO of gross negligence, excessive force, and blatant violation of human rights.

Rights groups, including the Springs Aid Foundation, have petitioned top authorities including the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission, and the National Security Adviser demanding a thorough, independent investigation.

They paint a disturbing picture of a raid that went horribly wrong: over 90 arrests, alleged extortion from detainees, assaults on innocent bystanders, and even a reported death linked to the chaos.
