LAGOS JULY 31ST (NEWSRANGERS)-Floodwaters have submerged a section of the Benin-Ore expressway, triggering traffic gridlock and disrupting movement.
The flooding followed hours of heavy rainfall, forcing motorists to slowly move through the inundated stretch while many other vehicles remained trapped in queues stretching several kilometres.
Videos circulating on social media showed floodwaters covering a significant portion of the expressway, with motorists struggling to navigate the submerged road amid fears of accidents and vehicle breakdowns.
In one of the videos, some passengers were seen waiting by the roadside while others lamented the recurring flooding on the highway, a major transport corridor linking Lagos, Ondo and other south-west states with Edo and the south-south geopolitical zone.
Some motorists called on the federal government and relevant authorities to urgently address the situation before it worsens.
The flooding caused significant delays for travellers, with many reportedly spending several hours on the road as drivers carefully navigated the affected section.
The Ore-Benin corridor is one of the country’s most strategic transport routes, serving as a key link for the movement of passengers, goods and petroleum products between the south-west, south-south and south-east regions.
Several parts of the country, including Delta, Lagos, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Edo states, have experienced severe flooding this year as the rainy season intensifies.
