Rotimi Akeredolu Wins Re-Election As Governor Of Ondo State
LAGOS OCTOBER 11TH (NEWSRANGERS) The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, the winner of Ondo State governorship poll.
Governor Akeredolu was returned elected after polling the highest number of votes in the keenly-contested poll conducted on Saturday, 10th October 2020. He won in 15 of the 18 local governments councils of the State.
In the election contested by 17 political parties, INEC Returning Officer, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka declared that the APC candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu secured 292,830 of the total votes, 97,039 more votes than his closest rival Eyitola Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), who got 195,791 votes.
The Candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and deputy governor of the State, Agboola Ajayi secured a total vote of 69,127.
The 15 local government areas won by the APC were Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Irele, Akoko North-East, Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Ondo East, Owo, Idanre and Akoko South-East, Ose, Odigbo, Okitipupa, and Ondo West, Ilaje and Ese Odo.
The PDP won in Akure South, Akure North and Ifedore local government areas, while the ZLP did not win in any local government.
From reports of independent observers, the election was characterized by malfunctioning of card readers in some polling Units. This however led to wide cancellation of votes where voting was done manually and in polling units where incidents of violence were reported.
Independent election observers maintained that the election was relatively peaceful but with pockets of violence. However, they observed high inducement of voters and vote buying.
On the observance of INEC COVID-19 Protocols, a civil society group, Yiaga Africa observed the 2-tier queuing system in 88% of polling units, the presence of infrared thermometer and disinfectant/sanitizers in 74% of polling units. However, the group added that there was a minimal observance of social distancing across all the polling units observed.
In assessing the electoral process’ responsiveness to the needs of persons with disabilities, Yiaga Africa observers reported the presence of the Braille ballot guide in 59% of polling units, magnifying glasses in 27% of polling units, forms EC 40H (PWD Voter information and statistics) in 93% of polling units and the PWD posters Form EC 30E in 90% of polling units.
