Daily Trust Photojournalist Escapes Death After Receiving Heavy Beating From Lagos Traders
LAGOS APRIL 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Daily Trust photojournalist, Benedict Uwalaka narrowly escaped death after a group of fifteen traders at Anifowose street in Kontagora market, Abule- Egba, Lagos on Sunday assaulted him while taking pictures.
The traders accosted and beat Uwalaka, describing him as an ‘informant’ working with the government.
According to Uwalaka, who sustained injury on his head, three men forcefully approached him while taking pictures of wheel-barrow pushers in the market.
He added that they raised an alarm of him being a snitch, attracting the attention of others who seized his camera, tied his two legs and hands.
“They beat me, tie my legs and hands at the back. They said I am an informat and as they were beating me, they were calling others. They said they will kill me,” he said while recuperating in a hospital at Egbeda, a suburb of Lagos.
He stressed that he reported the incident to Oke-Odo Police station in Ile-Epo, saying one of the culprits was arrested while others were on the run.
“I reported the incident to the police station at Ile-Epo and when they got to the scene, they arrested one while others ran away,” he said.
