Buhari: Critics Of My Administration Over ‘Isolated’ Cases Of insecurity Not Patriotic
LAGOS JULY 18TH (NEWSRANGERS)-President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday said those criticizing his administration over “isolated” cases of insecurity are not patriotic.
“Those who politicize the isolated incidents of insecurity are not patriotic Nigerians. I am confident that this administration uses all the resources at its disposal to protect the lives of all Nigerians and not just prominent Nigerians but all, ” Buhari disclosed.
He promised Nigerians to renew efforts in securing the country, fighting corruption and strengthening the economy.
According to him, “security challenges are not peculiar to Nigeria as the nation battles a rising wave of insurgency, kidnapping and banditry.
“Every country has security challenges, while we have made significant progress in fighting against terrorism, we acknowledge that there are new and emerging challenges of kidnapping and banditry,”
Buhari said when he received executives of the Buhari Campaign Organisation in Abuja.
Buhari spoke a day after former Nigeria president Olusegun Obasanjo warned him on the rising state of insecurity in the country.
“This issue (insecurity) can no longer be ignored, treated with nonchalance, swept under the carpet or treated with cuddling glove,” Obasanjo said in an open letter.
Obasanjo accused Buhari of “poor management or mismanagement of diversity” that led to the gathering of a “very onerous cloud.”
The former president said failure to address the security issues would result in “rain of destruction, violence, disaster and disunity” in Nigeria.
Obasanjo has been a staunch critic of President Buhari, writing series of stinging open letters and statements. Both of them were allies before Buhari’s election in 2015.
In 2018, Obasanjo accused Buhari of poor economic management, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, condonation of misdeed in the country. The former president was also absent at Buhari’s 2019 inauguration and the democracy day celebration.
But Buhari affirmed that security remained at the apex of his priorities. He assured Nigerians that successes recorded in degrading terrorists in the North-East would be extended to parts of the country experiencing security challenges. Buhari gave the assurance when he received members of executive committee Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) led by their President, Dr. Francis Faduyile, at the State House, Abuja.
He said criminals took advantage of the focus on the challenges in the Northeast to commit crimes in other parts of the country. The president noted that efforts were ongoing to improve on employment level, following the success in getting many persons into the agriculture sector. He expressed the hope that opening up the economy for investments and getting the youths engaged would control crime rate in the country.
The President spoke as the Senate on Tuesday resolved to hold a robust all-inclusive national summit to address the rising wave of insecurity across the country. This was sequel to the adoption of a motion moved at plenary by Senator Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central) who came under Orders 42 and 52 of the Senate Rules to raise the issue of insecurity in the country, especially the recent killing of the daughter of Afenifere leader, Mrs. Funke Olakunrin.
Akinyelure who expressed concern over the inability of the government to address the menace moved that the Senate should take decisive step on the matter and act accordingly. The motion was seconded by Senator Tolu Odebiyi (Ogun West) with the upper legislative chamber resolving to urgently convene an all-inclusive summit to address the myriad of security problems facing the nation.
