LAGOS DECEMBER 9TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Syrian capital, Damascus, descended into turmoil as rebels overthrew President Bashar al-Assad‘s regime.
Images and videos circulating on social media appear to show widespread looting of the central bank, with people carrying bags seemingly filled with cash. The Immigration and Passports Department building was reportedly set ablaze.
Looting and chaos at key sites
Unverified footage from Damascus showed individuals leaving the central bank with large bags, purportedly containing money. The Immigration and Passports Department building was seen engulfed in flames, adding to the scenes of unrest.
In another video, people were shown entering Assad’s Al-Rawda presidential palace, vandalizing rooms, and taking selfies amidst the luxury decor. The palace, spanning 31,500 square meters, was overrun with people taking photos and declaring it the “people’s palace.” The footage revealed a garage housing high-end sports cars, including Ferraris, Aston Martins, and a Bugatti Veyron.
Vehicles, including luxury cars, SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs, and an armored truck, were taken from the palace grounds. Furniture, clothes, and other items were also looted. “I came for revenge. They oppressed us in incredible ways,” said one man at the palace. Another individual stated, “I came to see this place that we were banned from because they wanted us to live in poverty and deprivation.” A third person commented, “I am taking pictures because I am so happy to be here in the middle of his house.”
