LAGOS FEBRUARY 21ST (NEWSRANGERS)-A woman identified as Mama Dada has allegedly set herself ablaze in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over her inability to pay back a N70,000 loan incurred from a microfinance bank.
The incident took place in her rented apartment at Oke-Keesi, Itoko area of Abeokuta where she reportedly got burnt beyond recognition.
The secretary of the Community Development Association in the area, Ade Babawale, confirmed the deceased’s was owing the bank .
Babawale said: “She was owing the sum of N70,000. Because she was unable to meet up with the payment, she sent her last born to buy fuel and also used style to discharge the small boy and she locked herself up inside the room, wet everywhere with petrol, including herself and set the whole place on fire.”
It was gathered that several of the traders in the said part of Abeokuta, engage in loan collection for their business in order to get more financing to cater for themselves and their family.
According to a former member of the community Bank’s group: “One must be a member and a committed one before you will be given a reasonable amount of money.
“What they do is that you will join the group and start making thrift with them, it is the evidence of this thrift through your card that will qualify you for a loan which you must either pay back outrightly or in batches.
“But either in batches or outrightly, there is always a set date for repayment that you must meet but if you default, you will live to blame yourself,” she said.
Reacting to the incident, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate in Ogun Central, Olumide Aderinokun, expressed sadness over the incidence.
He described the action of the deceased as tragic as he lamented the hardship women have endured with the loan scheme.
The deceased’s corpse have reportedly been deposited at the State General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
