Tobi Amusan Fails To Qualify For Olympics 100m Hurdles Finals
LAGOS AUGUST 9TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-Tobi Amusan, women’s 100m hurdles world record holder and Nigeria’s gold medal hope at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, has missed out on qualifying for the final.
In a semi-final race that was held on Friday, Amusan returned a time of 12.55 seconds to finish third behind Grace Stark of the United States who came first, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who finished as first runner-up.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, Amusan’s fiercest rival coming into the tournament, qualified for the finals after finishing first in another semi-final race with a season’s best of 12.35 seconds.
With this latest development, Nigeria’s chances of winning a medal at the Olympics have become slimmer.
Meanwhile, the athletes expected to compete for gold in the event at exactly 6:35pm on Saturday are Cyrena Samba-Mayela (France), Nadine Visser (The Netherlands), Grace Stark (USA), Masai Russell (USA), Alaysha Johnson (USA), Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico), Devynne Charlton (Bahamas) and Ackera Nugent (Jamaica).
Amusan’s return time left her in ninth place in the event’s semi-finals overall standings.
More importantly, the outcome has led to her missing out of the final by just one spot.
