LAGOS APRIL 20TH (NEWSRANGERS)-No fewer than three persons have been reported dead on Saturday night in Ikere-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State, during a post-convocation ceremony party.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident occurred at a popular hotel in the town, where scores of students and fresh graduates had gathered to celebrate the successful second convocation ceremony of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI), held earlier on Saturday.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the atmosphere, initially charged with excitement and jubilation, descended into chaos after a disagreement among some attendees escalated into a violent altercation.
The situation reportedly spiralled out of control when individuals allegedly began wielding sharp objects, triggering panic among partygoers.
According to sources, fear of imminent danger led to a frantic rush for safety, resulting in a stampede within the premises.
In the confusion that followed, several persons were said to have fallen and been trampled upon.
“Unfortunately, in the ensuing melee, three persons lost their lives,” a source disclosed.
“Two of the victims died as a result of the stampede, while another was reportedly attacked during the violence. One of those who died was a fresh graduate who had participated in the convocation ceremony earlier that day.”
The tragedy has been further compounded by reports that two of the deceased were siblings, throwing their family and the wider community into deep mourning.
As of the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer, when contacted, promised to get back to our correspondent on the incident.
However, police sources said efforts to make arrests and carry out further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the violence were ongoing.
