LAGOS JUNE 30TH (NEWSRANGERS)-According to a report by New York Post on Monday, June 29, 2026, residents of Ghana’s capital, Accra, were forced to climb onto rooftops and stranded vehicles on Monday after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across the city, leaving several communities submerged, disrupting transportation and claiming lives.
The heavy downpour, which began late on Sunday and continued into Monday morning, inundated major roads, homes and businesses across the Greater Accra Region, bringing economic activities to a standstill in several parts of the capital. Emergency responders launched rescue operations as floodwaters rapidly rose, trapping residents in their homes and motorists inside submerged vehicles.
Videos circulating on social media showed desperate residents taking refuge on rooftops while others waded through waist-deep floodwaters in search of safety. In one of the worst-hit areas, people were seen waiting for emergency assistance as water engulfed residential buildings and cut off access roads.
Commercial drivers and transport operators were also badly affected. At the busy Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, popularly known as Circle, several drivers climbed onto the roofs of their minibuses after floodwaters submerged the terminal. Some remained stranded for hours and were even forced to eat their meals while waiting for the water levels to recede.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the disaster has claimed at least nine lives, although officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue. Firefighters, police personnel and other emergency agencies have been deployed to assist stranded residents and recover victims from the affected communities.
Several major highways and roads, including sections of the N1 Highway, Kaneshie, Mallam, Weija, Achimota, Spintex Road and other low-lying parts of Accra, were rendered impassable by the flooding. Hundreds of commuters were left stranded as public transport services were disrupted and numerous vehicles were abandoned after becoming trapped in rising waters.
The flooding also complicated emergency response efforts after a massive fire reportedly broke out at a rubber factory in Accra. Firefighters faced significant delays reaching the scene because several roads had been submerged by floodwaters, raising concerns over the city’s disaster preparedness during extreme weather events.
Following the disaster, the Ghana Meteorological Agency issued another weather alert, warning that additional thunderstorms and rainfall were expected across southern Ghana later on Monday. Authorities urged residents living in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, avoid driving through flooded roads and move to higher ground where necessary.
