LAGOS OCTOBER 21ST (NEWSRANGERS)-An air ambulance transporting a female patient made an emergency landing after its door began opening mid-air, according to local reports.

Report monitor on People says a Beechcraft King Air C90A plane operating as an air ambulance departed Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, India, during the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 18, according to Bangladesh state-owned news outlet BSS, citing the nation’s Civil Aviation Authority. The plane was en route to Kolkata, a flight that lasts about an hour.

As the aircraft passed 12,000 feet in altitude, the plane developed a cabin pressurization issue damaging its main door, and caused it to partially open, according to the report. The pilot then ordered an emergency diversion to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

A spokesperson for HSIA confirmed to Bangladesh outlet The Daily Star that the aircraft developed a mechanical problem during the flight. The plane subsequently landed safely at the airport around 1:30 p.m. local time.

Following the diversion, the patient, identified as a 56-year-old female, was rushed to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. “She died at 4:40 p.m. at the hospital,” Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukder told the Star. “A police team also accompanied them at the hospital.”

The exact factors contributing to her death were not immediately known.

According to a passenger manifest obtained by the outlet, there were seven people on board, including two pilots, the doctor, a paramedic, an attendant, an additional passenger and the patient, Anjana Bhowmik.

The air ambulance was operating a domestic flight within India, meaning those on board did not have their passports and visas, the airport spokesperson added. Thus, the crew and passengers lacked the necessary clearance for an international landing.
