One Killed, Several Injured As Explosion Rocks Okpella Bomb Factory


LAGOS JANUARY 17TH (NEWSRANGERS)-There was pandemonium in Iddo quarters of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday evening following an explosion which rocked three apartments and sent many inhabitants running for safety.
Reports had it that one of the apartments, which was said to be occupied by some men from Kogi State, was being used as a workshop for the production of Improvised Explosive Device (IED), unknown to people of the neighbourhood.
The explosion was said to have claimed the life of one of the occupants whose identity could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report.
The other occupants of the apartment were said to have been injured.
An eye-witness, who went to the back of the building after the loud sound of explosion, discovered a lifeless body on the ground.
His alarm was said to have drawn the attention of other youths who apprehended other occupants of the building.
One of the occupants who allegedly escaped with a vehicle already loaded with prepared explosives, arms and ammunition, was said to have abandoned the vehicle in a bush path and escaped.
President, Iddo Okpella Youth, Mohammad Mohammad, who spoke on the incident, narrated: “We all came out when we heard the sound and informed the people that that thing that exploded killed somebody and that on getting to the place one of the occupants we met immediately escaped in a vehicle.
“So, the youths gave him a hot chase, shouting that he had killed somebody and he was subsequently arrested and taken to the Divisional Police Officer at Okpella before his onward transfer to the Area Commander in Auchi.”
Blood stains and some suspected explosive-producing materials littered the apartment.
Meanwhile, officers and men of the Police Area Command in Auchi have taken over the scene of the incident.
The Police Area Commander in charge of Edo North, Almed Adamu, while confirming the incident, said some persons had been arrested in connection with the incident, including the wife of one of the suspects, a nursing mother.
