One Beaten To Death As Agberos, Hausa Okada Riders Clash In Lagos

Policemen stationed at the scene of crisis

LAGOS APRIL 27TH (NEWSRANGERS)-What began as a minor clash between Hausa motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the Iyana-Iba area of Ojo, Lagos, quickly degenerated into a tribal clash, early Monday morning, as Hausa and Yoruba youths confronted themselves, wielding dangerous weapons.

The fracas according to eye witnesses began when Hausa motorcyclists gathered themselves to protest constant harassment by the road union members, after an Hausa motorcyclist was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death.

The fight which began with exchange of stones between members of the union and the motorcyclists, soon degenerated into a full blown crisis, as sporadic gunshots were heard at the scene.

Shouts of “e no concern una”, was barked at passerbys, as supposed members of the road union, tried explaining to whoever cared to listen, that the fight was between “us and aboki dem”.

The Lagos State Police Command however restored normalcy towards the afternoon as trucks of mobile policemen and personnel armoured career arrived at the scene.

When NewsRangers reporter arrived at the scene of the  crisis, there was calm with policemen, police vehicles and armoured  personnel carrier  stationed in the area.

A statement made available to Newsrangers,  disclosed that the  Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered for immediate deployment of additional police personnel to the area to maintain law and order as he also directed the Area Commander, Area E Festac, to personally be on ground to monitor the situation and invite the leaders of the affected Okada riders unit for an urgent meeting.

“The Command wishes to debunk the rumor that the disgreement, not violence as being peddled in the social media, was between some ethnic groups. Without mincing words, the incident has no ethic colouration whatsoever but a mere conflict between transport unions and their okada units on ticketing and increment in tariff.

“The Command therefore enjoins members of the public, especially those around the areas, including the students of the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, to go about their lawful businesses and studies respectively, as adequate deployment has been done to fortify security in the axis and by extension, in Lagos State in general,:the statement disclosed.
