LAGOS JULY 24TH (NEWSRANGERS)-According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the mayor of Temoac in Mexico’s central state of Morelos has been shot dead inside the municipal government building, months after surviving a previous assassination attempt, in the latest attack highlighting the persistent wave of political violence across the country.
Valentín Lavín Romero was killed on Wednesday after armed assailants opened fire inside the Temoac town hall, according to the Morelos State Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities confirmed that forensic investigators and police officers recovered the mayor’s body from the municipal offices before launching a large-scale operation to track down those responsible.
The attack took place in Temoac, a municipality in Morelos State located southeast of Mexico City. The region has experienced growing insecurity in recent years as rival criminal organisations compete for control of territory and illicit activities.
Initial reports indicate that gunmen entered the municipal building and carried out a direct attack against the mayor before fleeing the scene. Mexican media reported that the assailants escaped on a motorcycle, prompting security forces to establish checkpoints and launch search operations in Temoac and neighbouring municipalities.
Lavín Romero had previously survived an assassination attempt in January when unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle while he was travelling along the Mexico-Oaxaca federal highway near Jantetelco in Morelos. Although he sustained injuries in that incident, he later recovered and returned to office after taking temporary leave.
Following Wednesday’s attack, the Morelos State Government condemned the killing and pledged full cooperation with investigators to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The state’s Peace and Security Coordination Board also announced the deployment of additional security personnel to Temoac and surrounding communities as part of the ongoing manhunt.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been established, and authorities said all possible lines of investigation remain open. Prosecutors have not publicly identified any suspects or indicated whether the attack was linked to organised crime, local political disputes or other factors.
Lavín Romero, who was politically aligned with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s governing coalition, had served as mayor since late 2024 after winning local elections. His death has renewed concerns over the safety of elected officials in Mexico, where mayors frequently face threats, intimidation and violence from organised criminal groups seeking influence over local governments.
Official figures show that nearly 100 Mexican mayors have been killed since 2006, when the federal government intensified its campaign against drug cartels, triggering years of escalating violence across the country.
Since President Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, at least 14 mayors have reportedly been murdered, including three killings recorded in 2026. The continued attacks have raised concerns about the ability of local authorities to govern safely, particularly in regions where criminal organisations wield significant influence.
