LAGOS SEPTEMBER 1ST (NEWSRANGERS)-Osuagwu said the issue should not continue to resurface during every electoral cycle, arguing that Nigerians deserve clarity on the allegations surrounding the President.
In a statement, the former NUJ chairman noted that there had been concerns in some quarters that making public the alleged criminal activities linked to Tinubu could create problems either for the President or for those providing information about the matter.
However, he argued that psychological, philosophical and intellectual schools of thought suggest a different position on the issue.
According to Osuagwu, governments across the world generally do not protect individuals accused of criminal activities, except in situations where, as he alleged, a drug baron occupies the position of head of government.
He further argued that countries led by individuals who take a strong position against drug-related offences usually take action against people accused of criminal or fraudulent activities, including through deportation or extradition where applicable.
The former NUJ chairman referred to recent actions by the United States involving the repatriation of citizens from different countries over various offences.
He said the offences included drug trafficking, stealing, burglary and entering the United States with forged or fake documents.
Osuagwu stated that 32 Nigerian citizens were among those affected by one of the recent repatriation exercises.
He added that five Nigerians were also deported from the United States a few days ago over allegations of stealing.
He maintained that several countries make efforts to ensure that allegations against their leaders are properly addressed, adding that Nigerians were becoming increasingly tired of the continuing controversy surrounding the President.
Osuagwu therefore argued that making the alleged Tinubu drug case file public would help settle the matter and provide clarity to the public.
He said, “it is not true that releasing Tinubu’s drug case file will be harmful. “It will rather enable the World to know that Tinubu is not a criminal or didn’t commit the offence he is being accused of”.
According to him, releasing the alleged case file would also give the United States an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to justice and equal treatment under the law.
He appealed to the relevant authorities to make the alleged report concerning the President public, saying that doing so would allow Nigerians and the international community to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
He said the release of the report could also help end the repeated debate over the matter, particularly during election periods.
He further argued that Nigerians would be satisfied if the documents showed that Tinubu was not guilty of the allegations against him.
Osuagwu added that keeping the alleged report away from the public or allowing the matter to remain surrounded by secrecy could continue to fuel suspicion and create the impression that there was something being concealed.
He therefore urged the authorities to release the alleged Crimes Report involving the President so that the matter could be settled based on available facts rather than continued speculation.
