Lagos Task Force, Traders Clash Over Attempt To Demolish Their Shops

LAGOS NOVEMBER 8TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Violence broke out on Friday after men of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) invaded Jakande Market, Ketu.

he PUNCH gathered that the men, who were accompanied by security operatives, attempted to dislodge traders and destroy some shanties in the market.

As some of the traders resisted, a policeman was said to have fired a bullet, which hit one of the residents.

Some of the traders reportedly mobilised and protested against the shooting, which led to a free-for-all.

As of the time of filing this report, policemen were said to have been deployed in the area as tension mounted.

Angry youths were reported to have taken to the streets and destroyed vehicles parked by the roadsides, including a BRT vehicle.

A bus driver who asked not to be identified, said he had fled the area.

“There is serious tension here now. I have fled the place,” he said.

A police officer said the shot resident had been taken to a hospital.

He said, “He is not dead. The traders are protesting the shooting.”

The Head, Public Affairs Unit, Task Force, Adebayo Taofiq, said he would call back our correspondent but had yet to do so as of press time.

An official of the task force, who asked not to be identified, said the operation involved policemen from different formations.

She said, “It was an operation led by the command headquarters. It was not exclusive to task force. They may have taken our Black Maria and vehicles along.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said he was not around and could not comment on the incident.
