LAGOS NOVEMBER 27TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Crime Editor of New Telegraph newspaper, Juliana Francis, has emerged the first runner up of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Female Reporters Leadership Programme, 2017 edition.
At the award and appreciation ceremony held on Friday in Lagos, which had 15 female journalists selected from various media houses in the country, Francis emerged the first runner up of the award following an assessment on the quality of leadership and stories project done within the period given to them by the center.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinator of the Center, Motunrayo Alaka, said the programme was conceived because the media has a role to play in the society by setting agenda and promoting good development.
Alaka lamented that the imbalance gender in the media houses has become an issue practitioners should not keep quiet about because it draws Nigeria back as a society.
She said: “Some media houses don’t have woman in their board.
“How can the media houses preach against gender imbalance when they don’t have the moral ground because they have not given the women in the profession the opportunity.
“What we have in the media is unfair treatment for the woman and they are human beings, who need to be appreciated based on all their efforts.”
Alaka further lamented that when the media houses are sampling opinion on issues affecting the country, men are the ones being considered for solution and advice, while the women who are part of the system are neglected.
Alaka added that the center is celebrating 15 journalists selected from various media houses in the country who participated in a training where issues such as sexual harassment in work place, quality of female leadership and others were discussed.
She advised the journalists to pass their experiences and lessons through their hard work and monitorship to the young ones in the society.
