The midfielder reportedly collapsed during a match in Nigeria on Wednesday while visiting family.
According to reports, Okoye suffered a severe head injury after a collision on the pitch, leading to his sudden collapse.
Emergency responders rushed to his aid and transported him to a hospital, but he could not be revived despite efforts to save his life.
Okoye, born in 2000, had spent much of his football career in Italy, featuring for several amateur clubs including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport.
One of his former clubs, City of Canicattini, paid tribute to the late footballer, describing him as a dedicated and passionate player whose life was cut short during what was meant to be a visit home.
The club also recalled his time with them during the 2018–2019 season, highlighting his commitment to the sport and the relationships he built with teammates.
Okoye’s death comes shortly after another tragic incident involving Michael Eneramo, a former Super Eagles striker, who also died after collapsing during a local match in Kaduna.
Both incidents have raised fresh concerns about player safety and medical preparedness at football matches, particularly at the grassroots level.
