The Pan African Good Governance Council has named Engr. David Umahi the “Best Performing Governor” within the 2015 – 2019 administrative term in Nigeria.

The governor of Ebonyi State emerged the “Best Performing Governor” in Nigeria after months of evaluation and assessment in the Good Governance Indicators Programme.

Speaking during a press conference in Abakaliki, Nathan Otaba, Project Director (Nigeria), Good Governance Indicators Programme noted “The Good Governance Indicators programme seeks to measure suitable individuals in governance who have shown excellence in their roles in governance in all African States.

“For the evaluation of the governors in Nigeria, the assessment exercise was carried out by The Bureau of Research and Intelligence in partnership with various institutions across the country and our reputable partners”

“In Nigeria, this evaluation and assessment exercise is carried out every four years after the expiration of a tenure or term.”

Speaking further, Otaba noted “In the last four months, evaluations and assessment of public office holders from the last tenure/term has been ongoing across the country to measure the performances of Governors and appointees of governments.”

“Between 2015 and 2019, Nigeria’s economy was plunged into recession. Consequently, Governors who assumed office during this period blamed their lack of performance on the brewing economic recession, yet, out of creative ingenuity, Gov. David Umahi succeeded against the odds and attained unusual feat in the areas of infrastructural development, human capital enhancement/empowerment and social investment scheme. This honour is in recognition of his landmark accomplishments, achievements and his role in good governance.

Continuing, Otaba noted “Governor Dave Umahi, within the last four years in office, transformed the state into one of the fastest-growing states in the country. For anyone who knew Ebonyi State and in particular its capital Abakaliki, the transformation under Umahi can only be described as breath-taking. He adopted the policy of inclusive politics, which has made it possible for him to carry everyone along and has ensured the state experiences integrated development. This strategy has yielded tremendous gains. As the education sector is receiving attention, so is the health sector as well as all other sectors in different zones of the state.”

The PAGGC has also concluded the evaluation and assessment of public office holders in various states across the country with best performing appointees emerging from the exercise.
