Eid-el-Fitr : Death Toll In Borno Suicide Blasts Rises To 43

LAGOS JUNE 19TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The death toll from the multiple suicide bomb attacks by suspected Islamist Boko Haram militants on the town of Damboa in Borno State Saturday night has increased to 43.
The attack was targeted at people returning from celebrating the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.
It would be recalled that 32 people were killed, leaving 84 others injured and several houses destroyed in the multiple suicide bomb attacks.
The blasts occurred in the Shuwari and Abachari districts of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, which is about 90km from the state capital, Maiduguri.
“About 43 lost their lives, 12 individuals who are desperately injured” are being flown by helicopter to Maiduguri with help from the ICRC, Kaumi Wakil told AFP.
Wakil said 35 others were injured and were in the “process of referral to the ICRC clinic” in Biu.
Some residents said following the suicide bombings, the Boko Haram jihadists fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowds that had gathered at the scene of the attacks, driving the number of casualties higher.
“Civilians consistently bear the brunt of the conflict and over 200 women, children and men have now been killed in indiscriminate attacks in the North-East since the beginning of the year,” the UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria Myrta Kaulard said.
Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, commander of Operation Lafiya Dole had on Sunday denied the claim that the deaths were as a result of military fired artillery, saying the killings were caused by suicide attacks.
“There was nothing like an attack from the military artillery. You can see the pictures of six female bombers who detonated their explosives and as a result, 20 persons were killed while others were injured,” he said.
Rogers urged people to disregard the claim that people were killed by the military and not by suicide bombers.
