Court Sentences Late Gospel Singer Osinachi’s Husband To Death By Hanging
LAGOS APRIL 28TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-The High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme, who passed the sentence on Monday, found him guilty of the singer’s death which happened on April 8, 2022, stating that the prosecution had proved its case.
Nwachukwu was arraigned on a 23-count charge for culpable homicide punishable with death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, criminal intimidation of children, spousal battery and others.
He was prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (OAGF) after his arrest on April 11, 2022, three days after the singer’s death.
During his trial, the prosecution invited 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses. The prosecution also submitted 25 documents as evidence.
Reginald Nwali, Nwachukwu’s legal counsel, pleaded with the court to be lenient. But prosecuting counsel Aderonke Imala asked the court to apply the full weight of the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1. He was also given two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 18.
On Count 10, he was sentenced to six months imprisonment; and on Count 11, he got three years. The court also fined him N500,000 and N200,000 on counts 6 and 7.
Osinachi died on April 8 after suffering domestic violence at the hands of her husband. She was 42 years old and was initially claimed to have died from throat cancer, however, family members insisted that her husband was responsible for her death.
Nwachukwu doubled as the singer’s manager.
The artiste was popular for ‘Ekuweme’, a gospel track released in 2017
