LAGOS AUGUST 3RD (NEWSRANGERS)-A Catholic seminarian of the Otukpo Diocese in Benue State, Kelvin Ochai, has regained his freedom after escaping from the den of the gunmen who abducted him in Asa III, Otukpo Local Government Area.
The Diocese confirmed on Saturday that he safely reunited with his family after making his way to Aliade in neighbouring Gwer East Local Government Area.
The Diocese announced the development on Saturday in a statement signed by its Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, describing the seminarian’s return as an answer to prayers offered by Christians and supporters during his captivity.
Itodo stated that Ochai escaped from his abductors on Friday evening and trekked to Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was reunited with his family without suffering any injuries.
“Through the prayers of the people of God, Kelvin escaped from the custody of his abductors on the evening of Friday, 31st July, 2026, and made his way to Aliade, Gwer East LGA of Benue State. He has since been safely reunited with his family and is unharmed,” Itodo stated.
The Diocese credited what it described as divine intervention for the seminarian’s safe return, while expressing appreciation to members of the Catholic Church and other Nigerians who stood in solidarity with the family throughout the ordeal.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, thanked priests, religious communities, lay faithful and other well-wishers for their unwavering prayers and support, saying the concern shown during the period of captivity strengthened the Diocese.
He also described the seminarian’s escape as a manifestation of God’s mercy and protection.
Ochai was abducted by armed men at Asa III in Otukpo Local Government Area, one of several communities in Benue State that have witnessed recurring incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks.
The Diocese did not provide details of how the seminarian managed to escape from his captors or whether any ransom was demanded or paid before his return.
Security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
The latest development has brought relief to members of the Catholic community, who have continued to celebrate the seminarian’s safe return while renewed concerns persist over the worsening security situation across parts of Benue State, where kidnappings and attacks by armed groups have become increasingly frequent.
