LAGOS AUGUST 27TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Dolly Parton fans around the world are mourning after the country legend’s family announced her death on Tuesday, Aug. 25. She was 80.
Parton’s nephew Bryan Seever, who was also her longtime head of security, revealed the news in a video. A cause of death has not been shared.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seever said. “I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now. It is an honor. An honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us not with Dolly.”
Parton’s death comes more than one year after her husband, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82. The pair were married for nearly 59 years but never had any children. Parton reflected on the decision during a January 2024 interview with Saga Magazine.
“I haven’t missed it like I thought I might,” she said. “When you’re a young couple, you think you’re going to have kids, but it just wasn’t one of those burning things for me. I had my career and my music and I was traveling. If I’d had kids, I’d have stayed home with them, I’m sure, and worried myself to death about them.”
Parton was diagnosed with endometriosis and had a partial hysterectomy in her 30s, which affected her ability to have children. She chose to find meaning in her health challenges.
“I didn’t have children because I believed that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine,” she said in a 2020 episode of “The Oprah Conversation.”
“[Without kids of my own,] I could do things like Imagination Library,” Parton continued, referencing her nonprofit that mails free books to school-aged children. “If I hadn’t had the freedom to work, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done. I wouldn’t be in a position to do all of the things I’m doing now.”
In 1986, Parton founded the Dollywood Foundation, which aims to inspire educational success and reduce high-school dropout rates. Imagination Library was created in honor of Parton’s father, who never learned to read or write.
Parton’s philanthropy over the years also included raising money for the American Red Cross, HIV/AIDS-related charities and wildlife preservation. She was also a generous donor to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and to Hurricane Helene relief efforts.
In addition to her charitable efforts, Parton was generous with her many nieces and nephews.
“The older [Carl and I] get, the gladder we are that we don’t have [kids] now, because we take care of a lot of other people’s kids. We buy new cars for all the nieces and nephews that graduate, we send any to college that want to go,” she told Rolling Stone in 2003.
Parton was also the godmother of singer Miley Cyrus.
“I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton said of Cyrus, now 33, in a 2009 interview with ABC News. “I’m so proud of her, love her. And she’s just like one of my own.”
