Seven Somali Nationals Intercepted Hidden Under Rice Bags In Zambia

LAGOS JULY 26TH (NEWSRANGERS)- Zambian authorities have intercepted seven Somali nationals who were allegedly being smuggled through Zambia to Zimbabwe after they were found hidden beneath bags of rice in a vehicle, the Zambia Revenue Authority said on Wednesday.

The authority said officers stopped a Toyota Probox during a routine operation in Kapiri Mposhi as the vehicle travelled towards the Chirundu One Stop Border Post.

During an inspection, officers found the seven Somali nationals concealed in the rear cargo compartment under bags of rice and other goods, according to the ZRA.

The Zambian driver and the seven Somali nationals were handed over to the Department of Immigration for profiling and further legal action under the Immigration and Deportation Act.

In a separate enforcement operation, the ZRA said it impounded a vehicle that had remained in Zambia illegally after its temporary import permit expired.

The authority said the vehicle entered Zambia through Kasumbalesa Border Post in December 2025 but was not re-exported after the permit lapsed, in violation of customs regulations.

The ZRA reminded importers and motorists to comply with customs laws, warning that failure to do so could result in enforcement measures, including the seizure of vehicles and goods.
