LAGOS JULY 23RD (NEWSRANGERS)-According to a report by Euronews on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, authorities in Russia have intercepted a cat allegedly being used to smuggle illegal drugs into a penal colony in the country’s Nizhny Novgorod region, in what officials described as an unusual attempt to deliver contraband to inmates.
The incident occurred at Penal Colony No. 17, where officers from Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) discovered the animal carrying homemade fabric collars containing suspected narcotics before it could enter the prison compound.
According to a statement issued by the regional branch of the FSIN, prison staff became suspicious after spotting the cat near the correctional facility. A search of the animal revealed two improvised cloth collars, each concealing packages of unknown substances.
Officials said one package contained a green substance, while the other held a white powder believed to be an illegal narcotic.
“The offender turned out to be a cat equipped with homemade fabric collars containing unknown substances,” the prison service said in a statement. Authorities believe the animal had been trained or directed to enter the prison unnoticed and deliver the prohibited items to inmates.
The prison administration immediately confiscated the concealed packages and called in a specialist with a trained drug-detection dog to examine the substances.
Following an initial inspection and laboratory testing, officials confirmed that the seized materials contained illegal drugs, although the specific type and quantity of the narcotics have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine who attached the concealed packages to the cat and who was expected to receive them inside the correctional facility.
After the substances were removed, veterinary and prison officials examined the animal to ensure it had not been harmed during the incident.
Finding the cat to be in good health, officers released it back into the surrounding area.
“The furry offender was temporarily detained while the prohibited items were removed. After confirming that the animal was unharmed, it was released,” the FSIN said.
The unusual discovery has attracted widespread attention both within Russia and internationally, highlighting the increasingly creative methods employed by criminal networks attempting to smuggle prohibited items into correctional facilities.
Although rare, the use of animals to transport contraband is not unprecedented. In previous years, prison authorities in several countries have reported cases involving cats, pigeons and even drones being used to deliver drugs, mobile phones and other banned items to inmates.
Russian prison officials have in recent years strengthened security measures at correctional institutions, introducing enhanced surveillance systems, improved perimeter monitoring and specialised canine units trained to detect narcotics and other prohibited materials.
Despite these measures, law enforcement agencies say organised criminal groups continue to devise new methods of bypassing prison security.
Investigators are continuing efforts to identify those responsible for orchestrating the smuggling attempt, while the cat considered an unwitting participant rather than a perpetrator has been safely returned to the wild after its brief encounter with prison authorities.
