Looting, Chaos As South Africa Anti-Immigrant Protest Turns Violent

LAGOS JULY 1ST (NEWSRNAGERS)-Thousands of anti-immigration protesters have taken to the streets of Johannesburg and other South African cities yesterday, June 30, to enforce an unofficial deadline demanding that undocumented foreign nationals leave the country.

Organized by anti-migrant vigilante groups such as March and March and Operation Dudula, the nationwide demonstrations have caused widespread panic, forcing businesses to shut and prompting thousands of African migrants to flee the country or seek emergency refuge.

Large crowds have marched through the Johannesburg central business district (CBD) and the Soweto township, singing Zulu pride songs, carrying branches, and setting fires in city centres.

While organizers claim the marches are intended to be peaceful campaigns against crime and job competition, localized violence has flared up.

In Johannesburg, clashes have left at least one person injured, and police have arrested five individuals in Soweto for looting foreign-owned shop.

A south African woman was seen passionately defending the anti-immigration protests. She states that South Africans are patriotic rather than xenophobic, and claims Nigerians “have the audacity” to criticize South Africa while their own country faces severe internal crises.

She also go by saying they say we’re xenophobic. No, we’re not. We’re protecting our country. Nigerians have the audacity to tell us we’re xenophobic, yet their own country is falling apart… They are very useless and harsh when it comes to their own people. We’re patriotic. We don’t want our country to fall apart .
