LAGOS APRIL 15TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Having achieved a significant milestone of submitting it’s first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) in December 2024, the process of commencing the next reporting cycle of greenhouse gas emissions from relevant sectors of the Nigerian economy and documented in the Second Biennial Transparency Report (BTR2) and Fourth National Communication (NC4) has started with a stakeholders workshop in Abuja.

Declaring the technical workshop open, the Director General/CEO, National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe, who was represented by Mr Okebugwu Chukwuemeka, said that Nigeria, being a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement (PA), has the obligation to prepare and submit national reports of emissions of green house gases (GHG) by sources and removal by sinks, mitigation actions, adaptation impacts and support received or needed.

According to Dr Maduekwe, in order to meet this obligation, Nigeria has prepared and submitted to the UNFCCC, three(3) National Communications, two(2) Biennial Update Reports, and the recently submitted First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1).

“This process of preparing this report and communication, gears towards building mutual trust and confidence in a transparent manner that involves stakeholders’ participation and engagement, which overtime establishes a formidable institutional arrangement that allows seamless flow of information and data, for the achievement of quality reporting in Nigeria”, she said.

The two days intensive workshop which held at the Nigeria Air Force Conference Centre at Kado, Abuja, began with technical sessions with the introduction of workshops, reflections, lesson learnt for BTR1, analysis of Nigeria’s level of compliance with COP decisions, analysis of BTR1 for addressing the gaps and shortcomings.
