NFF Appoints Ex-Malian Int’l Eric Sékou Chelle As New Super Eagles Head Coach

LAGOS JANUARY 8TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced the appointment of Eric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles.

The decision was ratified by the NFF Executive Committee following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

Chelle, a former Malian international who earned five caps for the Aiglons of Mali, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Super Eagles. He previously managed clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran before being named Head Coach of Mali’s senior national team in 2022.

The 47-year-old led Mali to an impressive run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot. Mali lost 2-1 to the hosts and eventual champions after extra time, despite leading until the final minute of regulation time.

During his playing career, Chelle featured prominently in France, representing clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. His extensive experience as both a player and coach is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the Super Eagles.

Chelle’s appointment takes immediate effect, with his primary task being to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The next round of qualifiers (Matchdays 5 and 6) is scheduled for March 2025.
