LAGOS JUNE 7TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Donald Trump has said it may be better to let Ukraine and Russia “fight for a while” rather than push for peace talks immediately.
The American president made the remarks during a visit from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday in Washington. Merz expressed skepticism about the prospect of a near-term peace deal, as the war between the neighboring countries has dragged on for over three years.
Trump reportedly spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. According to Trump, Putin told him Russia would have to retaliate following Ukraine’s “Spider Web” operation, which targeted multiple Russian air bases.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Merz urged Trump to increase pressure on Moscow in order to force the Kremlin into serious negotiations with Kyiv.
Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia’s retaliation would come at the appropriate time, as Ukraine is already bracing for a large-scale attack.
While Russia has once again raised the specter of nuclear weapons, experts say it remains unlikely that Moscow would resort to such measures at this stage of the conflict.
