Rivers: 39-Year-Old Man Allegedly Shot Dead Over Cultural Infractions In Port-Harcourt
LAGOS MARCH 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The long and on-going communal clash between Agbo community in Cross River State and Esan community in Edo State in Nigeria has left a 39-Years- old man dead over cultural infractions in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state.
The victim, Mr Effiong Itang was reported to have been short dead by unknown gunmen in Port Harcourt Rivers State after escaping from Agbo community to avoid being killed for breaking the community vow.
Itang who is confirmed to be an indigene of Agbo community in Cross Rivers was shot dead on March 13th, 2022 at his residence at Sars Road, Rumuprekom, Port Haracourt, Rivers state.
A relation of Itang who did not want his name on print said Itang’s problem started when he went against the cultural vow of Agbo community in Cross Rivers state by getting married to lady of Esan Community in Edo state, Nigeria.
“After getting married to Esan lady and he was being hunted for braking the communal vow or taboo, he finally fled from the community when he heard that his name was listed among those to be slaughtered. It is unfortunate that despite his efforts to escape from being killed, he was still allegedly sht dead by unknown gun men,” he lamented
Reports gathered from other sources by our correspondent however confirmed the statement of Itang’s relation which suggested he may have been a victim of ethnic collision and disturbances, ranging from prohibited marriage, land dispute and chieftaincy title hence these are issues of pressing concerns among the natives in these communities. Beside, there are no law enforcement in matters relating to communal/cultural clash.
Recalled that this same communal conflict resulting mostly from prohibited marriages and land disputes, had caused continuous displacement of families and individuals. In the past years, we have seen committed couples and individuals lost their lives after incessant attacks from the community members, and going as far as investigating their new location to the union and intermarriages which they claim is a taboo. This is just one witnessed community clash out of several ethnic clashes in Nigeria.
