LAGOS MARCH 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The long and on-going communal clash between Agbo  community in Cross River State and Esan community in Edo State in Nigeria  has left a 39-Years- old man dead over cultural infractions in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state.

The victim, Mr Effiong Itang was reported to have been short dead  by unknown gunmen in Port Harcourt Rivers State  after escaping  from Agbo community to avoid being killed for breaking the community vow.

Itang who is confirmed to be an indigene of Agbo community in Cross Rivers was shot dead  on March 13th, 2022 at his residence at Sars Road, Rumuprekom, Port Haracourt, Rivers state.

A relation of  Itang who did not want his name on print said  Itang’s  problem started when he went against the cultural vow of Agbo community in Cross Rivers state by getting married to  lady of  Esan Community in Edo state, Nigeria.

“After getting married to Esan lady  and he was being hunted for braking the communal vow or taboo,  he finally fled from  the community when he heard that his name was listed among those  to be slaughtered. It is unfortunate that despite his efforts to escape from being killed, he was still allegedly sht dead  by unknown gun men,”  he lamented

Reports gathered  from other sources by our correspondent  however confirmed  the statement of Itang’s relation which suggested  he may have been a victim of ethnic collision and disturbances, ranging from prohibited marriage, land dispute and chieftaincy title hence these are issues of pressing concerns among the natives in these communities. Beside, there are no law enforcement in matters relating to communal/cultural clash.

Recalled that this same communal conflict resulting mostly from prohibited marriages and land disputes, had caused continuous displacement of families and individuals. In the past years, we have seen committed couples and individuals lost their lives after incessant attacks from the community members, and going as far as investigating their new location to the union and intermarriages which they claim is a taboo. This is just one witnessed community clash out of several ethnic clashes in Nigeria.
