Protesting Seafarers Cadets Shut Down NIMASA Headquarters
LAGOS SEPTEMBER 24TH (NEWSRANGERS)-This morning, some graduate cadets of the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) besieged the headquarters of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Apapa Lagos protesting 3 years of abandonment and lack of sea time by NIMASA since after graduation.
The cadets insist they would sleep at NIMASA entrance gate for 7 days to press home their demand.
When contacted, the image maker of NIMASA, Mr Isichei Osamgbi said the agency would issue a press statement on the matter later today.
Recall that since 2016 Platform Reporters instituted “A Day With Nigeria Maritime Students”, as a platform to discuss and proffer solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerian maritime students in general.
However, in 2017 and 2018 respectively, the DG NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside failed to honour invitations requesting him to address the students on some topical issues at the Conference. This aggravated the despair of the students making them feel their is no hope in sight from the NIMASA authorities. And the students seem to have decided to take their destinies into their hands by staging this protest.
Sylvanus Obasi of Platform Reporters is monitoring the situation closely to see how things pan out as the protest continues. Stay informed!
