Nigeria Leads In Squad Value Coming Into The 2023 AFCON At €349.75m

AFCON AND CLUB VALUES

Nigeria’s total squad value comes in at just over €2m more than anyone else competing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with star striker Victor Osimhen worth almost a third of their entire value.

Behind the Super Eagles is 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, whose squad is valued at €347.40m.

Third on the list is the Ivory Coast, who boast a total squad value of €334.58m with holders Senegal coming in next on €274.40m.

Ghana comes in at number five. The Black Stars entire 2023 AFCON squad is valued at €196.08m. Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, Egypt and DR Congo make up the top ten.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mo Salah has the highest market value for the Pharaohs. The 31-year old is listed at €65m.

West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus is Ghana’s most valuable asset with a market value of €45m. Man Utd and Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana is valued at €40m.

Victor Osimhen Is Worth More Than 14 2023 AFCON Squads

Napoli and Nigeria star Victor Osimhen is easily the most valuable star at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, boasting a higher market value than over half of the nations competing in the tournament.

A total of 14 countries have a lower total squad value than the Super Eagles striker, who is listed at a cool €110m.

The nations Osimhen is valued higher at include South Africa, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Guinea, Gambia and Angola.

More notably, Osimhen is worth four Mozambique’s, nine Mauritania’s and 18 Tanzania’s and Namibia’s. The 2023 Serie A Player of the Year will be the one to watch as the tournament unfolds.

At international level, Osimhen has 20 goals in 27 appearances for the Super Eagles and his goal tally is likely to increase considerably during the 2023 AFCON.

Osimhen has often been linked with a move away from the Italian champions but naturally, it would cost a vast sum to even tempt the Blues into selling.

Namibia €7,130,000.00 250/1
Tanzania €7,030,000.00 100/1

Reigning champions Senegal – who have the fourth highest squad value – are the joint 6/1 favourites to go on and win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

They share the 6/1 price with 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, who have the second highest squad value.

Ivory Coast and Algeria, who boast the third and sixth highest squad values, are currently the joint second favourites and can be backed at 7/1.

Nigeria, who of course have the highest squad value at AFCON, are the joint third favourites alongside Cameroon and Egypt (9/1).

With the Pharaohs in mind, Mo Salah’s expected long absence could seriously harm Liverpool’s Premier League title chances.

However, the Reds didn’t lose a single game last time he was at AFCON, Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana may be weary of losing the number one spot at club level if Cameroon go far.

All in all, is it a huge surprise to not only see Nigeria with the highest overall squad value and boast the most valuable star at the tournament but only come in at joint third favourites?

Absolutely not. Football, of course, is a team game and very rarely does one player make the difference at a major tournament.

With that said, Osimhen is a genuine world class talent so if Nigeria are to go far or even win it, you can be guaranteed the Super Eagles star will be the main culprit to their success.
