Nigeria Eaglets Fails To Qualify For FIFA U-17 World Cup, Loses To Burkina Faso 1-2

EAGLETS

LAGOS MAY 12TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Five-time winners of the FIFA U17 World Cup, Nigeria has failed to qualify for the competition for the second time in a row after losing 2-1 to Burkina Faso today.

Before the AFCON U17 tournament started, the Golden Eaglets were seen as one of the huge favorites that will grab a ticket to the World Cup, but unfortunately, a defeat which could have been averted shattered their dreams of winning a 6th WC title.

Of course, many of the Nigerian players should get their own fair share of blame for failing to beat Burkina Faso, but a big chunk of the blames should be on Nduka Ugbade who made 2 rash decisions that contributed to their elimination.

  1. Central defender Tochukwu Ogboji was culpable for Burkina Faso’s first goal. After Richard Odoh punched the ball away, Tochukwu just needed to clear the ball away from danger, but he couldn’t do such a simple task as Aboubacar Camara pounced on the loose ball to score for Burkina Faso.

Ugbade who saw that mistake should have taken him off but he allowed Tochukwu to play on, and we all witnessed the consequence of that decision as Tochukwu went on to concede a penalty in the second half which Camara dispatched with ease.

2. Late Substitutions:

Light Eke was largely anonymous in the first half and kept misplacing passes, but the Nigerian coach still allowed him to continue even after the break.

Shortly after Nduka eventually brought in Favor Daniel in place of Light Eke, the Golden Eaglets pulled one back by courtesy of Favor’s assist to Abdullahi.

Had Nduka made his substitutions early enough, Nigeria could have mounted a comeback.
