Lawyers Petition IGP Over Policemen Alleged Extortion Of $5,000, N1.35m From Their Clients
LAGOS JULY 28TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Lawyers from the Chamber of Oluwatodimu Ige & Associates have petitioned Nigeria Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba over alleged extortion of $5,000 and N3.350m from their clients, Mr Showunmi Fatai and Mr Oyeneye Samuel Toyosi by operative of Nigeria policemen in Lagos.
The lawyers in the petition have accused a police officer Mr. Enobaghare Friday, Alias Curtis Black for leading no fewer than seven policemen to the residence of Fatai and Toyosi where they searched their apartment, damaged their furniture and made away with the sum of $5, 000 in cash from the wardrobe of Mr. Showunmi Fatai Shina.
The petitioners alleged that after the policemen searched their client’s apartment without any search warrant and damaging the furniture they whisked them away in Shina’s RX 350 Lexus Vehicle and a Toyota Sienna bus in which they came in.
“After our clients were whisked away from their home, they were separated into two
vehicles, after serious beating and manhandling by the seven officers. They collected the phone of MR. OYENEYE SAMUEL TOYOSI and went through his bank transactions and when they saw the account balance of N1, 700, 000 (One Million,
Seven Hundred Thousand Naira only) they began to withdraw money from his account
using POS operators after forcefully collecting his ATM Card and pin number of his Access bank account number 0800116257.
“A whooping amount of money worth N1.350m was withdrawn from POS operators there. After that, they allowed them to go. The victims were able to get the name of their leader while he was browsing during the torture. They goggled it later and got his pix. They called a top police officer who related to them in Abuja and he directed them to CP who advised that a petition be written to IGP.
“After that, they called PPRO, Lagos who called DPO red house Iju and he helped in tracing their hideout around the area. Two of them including the gang leader who happened to be a serving police officer were arrested. Four others are still on the run. Weapons were recovered from them. The second arrested suspect is a dismissed police officer. They are alleged to be a gang of notorious robbers that have been operating in different parts of Lagos and beyond for long and have been on police searchlight,” the Petitioners revealed.
Consequently, Oluwatodimu Ige & Assosciates in the petition signed an Associate Partner, Cynthia Nwaokonkwo appealed to the IGP to use his your good office to cause the sad occurrence of the 15th July 2022 be investigated and the errant officers be booked and punished for their gross misconduct if found guilty to forestall further hardship on other citizens and damage to the reputation of the Nigerian Police Force.
“That you mandate the officers, to immediately compensate and refund the money
spent at the hospital by our client to treat himself and his friend as a result of their
severe beating on his person with an apology to your office for misrepresenting it
to the public.
“That you mandate and ensure immediate refund of the sum of N1, 313, 500 (One
Million, Three Hundred and Thirteen Thousand Naira) fraudently withdrawn
from our clients account as well as the sum of $5, 000 cash forcefully taken from
our clients’ wardrobe.
