Lagos: How Flood Sweeps Away 18-Year-Old Girl Into Surulere Canal
LAGOS JUNE 23RD (NEWSRANGERS)-Aishatu Saidi, an 18-year-old girl, has died after flood from one of the major canals in the Alapafuja area of Surulere, Lagos State, carried her away.
The incident was said to have happened on Monday.
According to Ganiyatu Saidi, mother of the deceased, her late daughter had joined her in cooking rice, which they sell at the entrance to the Gbaja Market, opposite Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church, when the incident happened.
Saidi explained that they were both waiting for the food to be ready when Aishatu, a SS3 student of New Era girls Secondary school, left where she was standing near the cooking area and went close to the canal.
She said: “I was looking away in another direction attending to one of my cooking staff, when I heard people from the other side of the canal shouting for help to save somebody who had fallen into the flooded canal. I saw the victim struggled for survival raising her hands, I was still shouting for help when I saw my daughter brought her head out in the middle of heavy flood fighting for her life.
“I ran close to the canal and shouted louder for help, but nobody around Alapafuja behind the Zumuratul Mosque, had any swimming experience, so we were just there shouting, until somebody from the other side of the canal jumped into the canal to rescue my daughter but at this time, it was too late as the man searched in vain for my daughter.
“The canal heavy current had taken her away. And the man had no option than to come out to save his own life. That was the last time I saw my daughter uptil now, nobody has told me the whereabouts of my daughter.”
The distressed mother said her husband, Lekan Mustapha, had trailed the course of the canal up to the Ritalori Hotel, with the hope of tracking the whereabouts of their daughter.
She, however, lamented in tears that the effort had not been successful.
She said she strongly believes that her daughter is not dead and that she will reunite with her daughter soon.
She implored the Chairman of the Surulere Local Government Area to combine with the Lagos State government put in place a search party to look for her daughter.
