Iranian General, Pilot Die In Helicopter Crash
LAGOS NOVEMBER 5TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-Two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from Iran died in a gyroplane helicopter accident near Sirkan, a city in Sistan-Baluchistan province in Iran, on Monday, November 4, 2024. One of the deceased victims mentioned in the Fars News Agency report is Brigadier General Hamid Mazandarani, commander of Brigade Nineveh. The pilot was also reported dead.
“A general and an Iranian pilot died in an ultra-light gyroscope accident during counter-terrorism maneuvers in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan on Monday,” according to Fars.
The report also detailed that the ultralight helicopter was engaged in combat operations during military exercises when it crashed. The accident occurred following the deaths of 10 Iranian law enforcement personnel a few days earlier after a terrorist attack in the Gohar Kuh district, Taftan.
There has been no official response from the Iranian Foreign Ministry. It is also unclear why Mazandarani was visiting the southeast, as he was based in the northern province.
This helicopter accident also occurred to the late President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi. He died in a helicopter accident in May. Such flight incidents are rare in Iran.
It is not officially known what caused the accident that led to the president’s death, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others.
The city of Sirkan is reported to be a site of clashes between Iranian security forces, Sunni militants, and drug traffickers.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is currently engaging in battles with the Israeli military. Recently, Israel launched attacks against Iran likely damaging facilities operated by the IRGC.
Satellite images show that the attack on October 26 struck the Shahroud base belonging to the IRGC, which is responsible for building ballistic missiles and launching rockets as part of Iran’s space program.
Following the attack, Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi accused the US of involvement in the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US for close coordination and assistance in carrying out the attack.
