Collapsed Church Building Kills Pregnant Woman, Five Others In Ondo
LAGOS MARCH 21ST (NEWSRANGERS) – A Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ija-Ugbo area of Arogbo Ijaw, Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday collapsed, killing a pregnant woman, Dali Gunuboh, and five other persons.
The names of other victims of the building collapse were given as Morenike Bubuma, Margret Goloba, Mayama Goloba and Kowei Aboa.
It was learnt that four other persons were seriously injured when the incident occurred about 10a.m.
The deceased was said to have left their homes for the site of the church building, which was under construction, to fetch some fire woods.
A source said the casual workers working at the site had vacated the building for some time after raising it to accommodate more members of the church.
Monday Konwei, Information Officer with Ese-Odo Local Government, confirmed the incident and said the victims were in the church premises to gather firewood when the incident happened.
“While gathering the woods, part of the dilapidated old structure and the one under construction fell and killed six of them,” the source said.
The Chairman of the Council Caretaker Committee, Bekewe Olowu, also confirmed the incident and described it as shocking and devastating.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, described the incident as sad and unfortunate.
Joseph said only five people lost their lives in the incident while struggling for the used wood at the site of the building.
He said: “A renovation was going on in one of the churches in the area. They are trying to build a bigger church. They are also trying to demolish the old one after building the new one. The building collapsed while the people were struggling for wood.
“Five people were killed on the spot while four others were seriously injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
“The death of the five people could have been avoided. But the people were in a hurry to fetch the wood. They should have allowed the bricklayers to finish their work before invading the building. The command has begun investigation into the incident.”
