Napoli Lawyer Threatens To Sue Osimhen If He Plays In Nations Cup
LAGOS DECEMBER 24TH (NEWSRANGERS)-A lawyer representing Napoli is considering taking legal action to prevent players from taking part in the Africa Cup of Nations set to start next month.
In the wake of the increase in positive Covid-19 test results around the world following the emergence of the Omicron variant, there have been doubts whether the tournament in Cameroon should go ahead.
Cameroon reportedly only has around five per cent of its population vaccinated, leaving clubs concerned over the health of any players from Europe who may travel there.
But Napoli lawyer Mattia Grassani has stated that action could be taken in regards to exempting European based players from the tournament.
‘Given the epidemiological situation, warnings and other similar situations may start,’ he told Calcionapoli24.it.
‘This competition takes away important resources from the clubs. This is a particular historical moment, it would be different if there was 99 per cent security and the situation was clear.
‘[Napoli] have invested a lot of money in signing Victor Osimhen and if he were to come back infected it would be tough.
‘The first step would be a warning [to prevent a call up] then if there were concrete elements to sue because the health standards are not the same as in European competitions, then there could be more appeals to gain an exemption for Europe-based players.’
Osimhen has claimed that he will be fit to play in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next month, despite suffering a horrific facial injury while playing for Napoli last month.
The 22-year-old fractured his eye socket and cheekbone in a sickening head clash with Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar during a Serie A match, and was originally ruled out of action for three months.
However, he has announced on Twitter that he will be ready to represent his country if he is selected in the squad in the coming days.
‘I will be available for AFCON unless if [sic] am not among the players picked to represent NIGERIA,’ he posted on Tuesday.
He has scored nine goals in 14 appearances across all competitions for Luciano Spalletti’s men.
