Military Besiege Uganda Opposition Candidate Wine’s Home
LAGOS JANUARY 16TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Wine, who is also known as Robert Kyagulanyi, showed Reuters around his compound, where several armed men were seen through a fence communicating via radios. “I thought I should inform the world that our lives are in danger and should anything happen to us, at least we have had the opportunity while still alive to expose everything that is being plotted on our lives,” Wine said during a news conference from within his compound.
A government spokesperson denied that Wine was under house arrest, saying that security had been deployed in the neighbourhood where Wine lives for his own protection.
Long-time leader Yoweri Museveni took a commanding lead in Uganda’s presidential election with almost half the votes counted on Friday though Wine, his main rival, said there had been widespread fraud.
Wine’s claims have not been independently verified by Reuters. The United States and European Union did not deploy teams of observers for this election, though the African Union and East African Community did.
