113 Passengers Die In Cuba Plane Crash Crash


LAGOS MAY 19TH (NEWSRANGERS)-At least 113 people have died after a plane crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport, Cuban state media said on Friday.
According to local media, it was carrying 104 passengers and nine foreign crew.
The domestic flight, operated by national airline Cubana de Aviacon, crashed near a motorway and school campus in Boyeros neighbourhood, located next to the airport.
The flight was headed to the city of Holguin on the eastern side of the island, was scheduled to take one hour and 20 minutes.

Witnesses saw a large fireball followed by a towering plume of smoke near the airport on the outskirts of the Cuban capitaloutskirts of the Cuban capital.
Local media reported that the plane lay in a farm and appeared heavily damaged and burnt, with firefighters spraying water on the smoldering remains.
Witnesses had told local media that they have seen ambulance crews leading survivors away from the wreckage.
Government officials including President Miguel Diaz-Canel rushed to the site, along with a large number of emergency service workers and ambulances.
The latest crash is Cuba’s third major accident since 2008.
Last year, a Cuban military plane crashed into a hillside in the western province of Artemisa, killing eight troops on board.
In November 2010, an AeroCaribbean flight from Santiago to Havana crashed in bad weather as it flew over central Cuba, killing all 68 people, including 28 foreigners, in what was Cuba’s worst air disaster in more than 20 years.
