Court Dismisses False Assassination Charge Against Dino Melaye

LAGOS JUNE 3RD (NEWSRANGERS)-A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Maitama, on Tuesday, discharged and acquitted Senator Dino Melaye of the allegation that he made false assassination claim in 2017.
Justice Olasumbo Goodluck, in a ruling on a no-case submission filed before the court held that the prosecution counsel failed to establish a prima facie case against the former federal lawmaker for Kogi West Senatorial District.
Senator Melaye was alleged to have, sometime in April, 2017 deliberately given false information to the police to incriminate the-then Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, Mr Edward Onoja, as the mastermind of an assassination attempt on him.
He was also alleged to have, in April 2017, made a false statement in a phone conversation with one Mohammed Abubakar with the intention of harming the reputation of Onoja.
Senator Melaye, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, punishable under the penal code and was docked before the court on March 1, 2018, but granted bail to the tune of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Ruling on the matter on Tuesday, Justice Goodluck upheld Melaye’s no-case-submission and dismissed the charge for want of evidence.
