Ghanaians Give Foreign Traders Final Ultimatum To Vacate Market
LAGOS NOVEMBER 21ST (NEWSRANGERS)-The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), yesterday, gave a final ultimatum to foreigners involved in retail trade to leave the markets.
In furtherance with the eviction order, GUTA,
consented to open temporarily, all recently closed shops to enable the owners
pack their wares and move out.
The traders Union in a statement tagged, “Enough is Enough”, warned that in
view of the inability of the government to enforce the local legislation on
retail trade, the traders had resolved to take action, regardless of the
consequences.
“In view of this, we hereby issue ultimatum of one week to the government to
ensure that all state institutions responsible for the enforcement of our laws
on retail trade by foreigners in the country are implemented to the letter as
it is done in all sovereign states which bring peace and its attendant
security.
“However, if we do not see concrete
action by the authorities to decisively deal with the situation, we shall
advice ourselves on the next line of action, which will be staged nationwide
and will damn the consequences, especially if security agencies are used as
state machinery to suppress us, “ the statement said.
GUTA maintained that the
non-enforcement of the legislation, which reserved retail trade for the
citizens had caused them extreme hardship.
The traders said several petitions to relevant authorities including the
Ministry of Trade and Industry, Office of the President, GIPC, Office of the
Council of State and other stakeholders have not resolved the issue.
