LAGOS NOVEMBER 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-There was palpable fear on Monday at the Anambra State office of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) following a bomb scare, which prompted the deployment of bomb disposal experts to the place.
When News Express visited the area, stern-looking policemen were seen parading the environs while armoured vehicles were packed at strategic positions.
The enthusiastic mood which had earlier been the order of the day ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state abruptly changed to that of apprehensive. While people entering the office were properly scrutinised and searched before being allowed to do so.
Speaking on the issue, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, denied the incident, saying: “There was a bomb planted outside the INEC office but it didn’t explode.”
Some INEC staff who pleaded anonymity said that since the incident happened early hours of the day, they had become scared to stay in the office.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nkeiruka Nwode, said she was not aware of it.
Asked why the influx of bomb disposal experts at the INEC office, Nwode said it was part of preparations for the Saturday governorship election.
Already, Anambra has been taken over by security operatives from outside the state in readiness for the November 18 governorship election.
A retinue of policemen were seen in a convoy of vehicles earlier today with their loads at the Aroma area of Awka as they drove into the state capital.
